What can trigger lichen planus?

Lichen planus reflects inflammation in the skin or mucous membranes, and a clear cause is often not found. A rash that begins after a new medicine may resemble lichen planus, so timing and examination matter before any medicine is stopped.

Scratching, friction, or injury can irritate an area and may encourage new lesions in susceptible skin. Dental work or a contact reaction can be relevant when changes are limited to the mouth. These clues do not prove that one exposure caused the condition.

Write down when the first patch appeared, where it began, recent medicines or supplements, dental procedures, skin injuries, and products used on the area. Photograph changes in consistent lighting and note itch, pain, mouth soreness, or spreading.

Keep routine care gentle: avoid scratching, tight clothing, fragranced products, and abrasive brushing over sore skin. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own; ask the prescriber whether a replacement or review is needed. A clinician may treat symptoms with a topical corticosteroid while the possible trigger is assessed.

Book a dermatology review for a new persistent rash, especially if it is spreading or affecting the mouth, eyes, scalp, nails, or genitals. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision changes, trouble drinking, rapidly blistering skin, fever, or signs of infection.
