What should you know about lichen planus treatment?

A dermatologist may first confirm the diagnosis because several rashes can resemble lichen planus. Treatment commonly reduces the immune-driven inflammation behind the rash rather than removing a single infection. It may also address itch, soreness, thickened patches, or changes affecting hair and nails.

For limited skin disease, a prescribed topical corticosteroid may be applied to the involved areas for a defined course. More extensive or stubborn disease can call for another approach, sometimes including oral corticosteroid treatment or a specialist-directed alternative. Mouth or genital symptoms need advice suited to delicate tissue.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if new purple, itchy bumps or persistent rough patches are appearing. Keep a record of where the rash started, how itch changes, medicines and supplements you use, and whether the mouth, eyes, scalp, nails, or genitals are involved.

Use only the prescribed amount and schedule of a steroid cream; stronger products and sensitive sites need particular care. Gentle fragrance-free cleansing, regular moisturising, and short nails can reduce irritation from scratching. Do not stop an oral steroid suddenly unless the prescriber gives that instruction.

Seek prompt medical care for painful mouth sores that limit drinking, eye pain or vision changes, rapidly spreading or blistering skin, severe genital soreness, or signs of infection such as increasing warmth, pus, or fever. Contact the prescriber if treatment causes marked burning, skin thinning, or a new reaction.

Ask which body sites are affected, how long the proposed treatment should be used, what improvement to watch for, and what to do if the rash returns. Ask whether any current medicine or supplement could be contributing to the eruption and whether mouth, nail, scalp, or genital review is needed.
