What should you know about lichen planus tongue causes?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that may involve the lining of the mouth. On the tongue, it can produce white lacy lines, red tender areas, burning or sensitivity to spicy and acidic foods. Some people have mouth symptoms with skin lesions, while others notice oral changes separately.

A tongue coating, ulcer or sore patch is not specific to lichen planus. Irritation, infection, dental trauma, medication effects and other mouth conditions can look similar. A clinician or dentist may examine the whole mouth and discuss further testing when a lesion persists or its appearance is uncertain.

Arrange an oral examination for persistent, recurrent or unexplained tongue changes. Choose soft foods, sip water, avoid tobacco and alcohol, and limit items that burn or scrape the area. Use a soft toothbrush and do not pick at a coating or ulcer. Keep a note of new medicines, dental work and foods that trigger discomfort.
