Is oral lichen planus contagious?

This condition reflects inflammation in the mouth lining. It may produce fine white lines, patches, redness, tenderness, or ulcers on the inner cheeks, tongue, gums, or nearby surfaces. Those changes can look alarming, but their presence does not mean a partner or family member is at risk of catching them. Similar-looking mouth problems can have different causes, so a dental or dermatology examination is still worthwhile rather than relying on appearance alone.

You do not need to isolate yourself or separate household items because of oral lichen planus. Continue ordinary hygiene and dental care, use a soft brush, and avoid foods that make the mouth sting. Tell your clinician about medicines, tobacco use, or persistent irritation that might affect the mouth. Treatment can include a medicine applied to the inflamed area; oral corticosteroid treatment may be considered when inflammation is more extensive. Book a review if a white or red patch, sore, or burning sensation persists or keeps returning. Seek prompt attention for bleeding without an obvious cause, a lump or thickened area, increasing pain, difficulty swallowing, or a sore that does not heal. These signs do not identify one diagnosis by themselves, but they should be examined so that infection, irritation, medication effects, or another mouth condition is not missed.
