Lichen planus on the wrist: what to know

Wrist lesions may be purple, reddish, or brown and can feel rough or smooth. They often itch, and repeated rubbing can make the area sore or leave darker marks. Jewellery, watch straps, contact irritation, eczema, and other rashes can affect the same region. A clinician looks at the pattern and may examine other skin, mouth, nails, or scalp for related findings.

Remove watches or bracelets that rub, use a fragrance-free moisturiser, and keep the area cool. Try not to scratch; a soft covering at night may reduce unconscious rubbing. A clinician may prescribe a topical corticosteroid for a localised rash. Oral corticosteroid treatment is sometimes discussed when inflammation is widespread or severe. Follow the instructions for duration and application, especially on thinner skin near the joint.

Arrange an appointment if the wrist rash persists, spreads, cracks, bleeds, or interferes with sleep or movement. Seek prompt care for pus, rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, or fever. New mouth, eye, genital, or nail symptoms should be mentioned during the same assessment.
