Lichen planus on the shins: what to know

The shins can develop small, flat-topped or slightly raised bumps with a smooth or scaly surface. New bumps may look purple, while older areas can leave darker marks after inflammation settles. Itching may be prominent, and scratching can create additional irritation or new lesions. Other rashes can look similar, so a clinician considers the shape, colour, distribution, medicines, and skin history before confirming lichen planus.

Apply a plain moisturiser, keep nails short, and use cool rather than hot water when the skin feels itchy. Choose loose clothing and avoid rubbing the shins while the rash is active. A prescribed topical corticosteroid can reduce inflammation; oral corticosteroid treatment may be discussed for more extensive symptoms. Use treatment exactly as directed and mention pregnancy, other medicines, or previous reactions before starting it.

Arrange a review when bumps are spreading, severely itchy, painful, bleeding, or not settling. Seek prompt care for warmth, pus, rapidly increasing swelling, or fever, which can signal infection or another problem. Sudden widespread skin change or mouth, eye, or genital symptoms also merits timely assessment.
