Lichen planus on the mouth: what to know

Oral lichen planus may appear as fine white lines or lace-like patches on the inner cheeks, tongue, gums, or lips. Some people have burning, tenderness, or open areas, especially after spicy, acidic, or rough foods. Mouth changes can have other causes, so an examination is needed rather than relying on photographs alone. A clinician may inspect the mouth and sometimes take a small sample to clarify the diagnosis.

Use a soft toothbrush, choose mild toothpaste, and avoid tobacco, alcohol mouthwash, and foods that trigger burning. Keep regular dental checks and tell the clinician about medicines or dental materials that preceded the change. Treatment may include a prescribed topical corticosteroid applied inside the mouth; more extensive symptoms may lead to discussion of oral corticosteroid treatment. Do not use someone else’s medicine or stop a prescribed course without guidance.

Arrange an appointment for persistent white patches, repeated ulcers, bleeding, increasing pain, or difficulty eating. Seek prompt medical help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, or if you cannot keep fluids down. New or changing areas deserve review even when discomfort is mild.
