Treatment for lichen planus on the legs

Leg lesions can be raised, itchy and rough, and scratching may cause additional marks or thickening. After the active inflammation settles, darker or lighter areas may remain for some time. A dermatologist chooses treatment after checking whether the rash is localised, widespread, thickened, infected or affecting another site such as the mouth. A treatment that helps one area may need adjustment on thinner skin or near sensitive body sites.

Apply a bland moisturiser regularly, especially after bathing, and use lukewarm water rather than very hot water. Keep nails short and try a cool compress when itching rises. A topical corticosteroid can reduce inflammation when prescribed for the correct area and duration. An oral corticosteroid may be considered when disease is extensive or particularly active, but it requires medical supervision and should not be started, stopped or shared without advice. Wear soft clothing to reduce friction.

Arrange an examination if a leg rash persists, spreads, becomes painful or repeatedly returns. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, open sores or severe pain. Contact a clinician sooner if itching prevents sleep or if treatment causes marked burning, skin thinning or another unexpected change.

Ask which lesions should receive medicine, how much to apply, when to stop, and what improvement should look like. Discuss whether mouth, nail or genital symptoms change the plan, how to manage leftover colour changes, and whether a biopsy is needed before treating an unusual patch.
