Where does lichen planus occur most frequently?

On skin, lichen planus may form small, firm, itchy bumps that can look purple, reddish or brown depending on skin tone. The bumps may join into rough patches, and scratching can create new areas along irritated skin. Mouth involvement may appear as white, lace-like lines or sore patches rather than a typical raised rash. The condition is an inflammatory skin and mucosal disorder; seeing bumps or itching alone does not establish the diagnosis.

A dermatologist can examine the distribution and surface of the lesions and may recommend a biopsy when the appearance is not clear. Treatment is chosen according to the site and severity. A prescribed topical corticosteroid may calm inflammation on accessible skin, while an oral corticosteroid may be considered for more extensive or difficult disease. Use medicines exactly as directed, moisturise dry skin, and keep nails short to reduce damage from scratching.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a persistent, spreading or very itchy rash, especially when it affects the mouth, genitals, scalp or nails.
