Lichen Planus: Most Common Sites

On the skin, lichen planus may form small, raised, purple or reddish bumps with a flat surface. The wrists and ankles are frequent locations, while the lower back and legs may also be involved. Fine white lines can sometimes cross the surface. In the mouth, it may look like a lacy white pattern on the cheeks or sore areas. Hair, nails, or genital skin can be affected too, so location alone does not confirm the diagnosis.

Take a clear photograph when a patch is visible and note whether it is changing, sore, or itchy. Avoid scratching and choose gentle, fragrance-free skin care. A dermatologist can compare the appearance with other causes of skin bumps and decide whether treatment such as topical corticosteroids is appropriate. Mouth or genital symptoms may need a focused examination.

Arrange a medical review for a new spreading rash, persistent mouth soreness, nail changes, hair loss in patches, or symptoms affecting eating, drinking, or sleep. Seek prompt help for severe mouth pain, difficulty swallowing, or rapidly worsening skin changes.
