Lichen planus on the lower lip

The lower lip may become rough, cracked, crusted, or tender, sometimes with a pale or white edge and nearby inflammation. Symptoms can worsen with licking, wind, sun, or foods that sting. A clinician may look inside the mouth for white lines or sore areas and inspect the skin for itchy bumps. A persistent lower-lip lesion can also reflect contact irritation, infection, sun-related damage, or another disorder, so location alone does not establish lichen planus.

Use a plain, fragrance-free ointment regularly, drink enough to avoid dry-mouth discomfort, and do not peel scale or crust. Avoid new cosmetics, flavoured balms, tobacco, and mouth products that cause burning. Note whether the lesion changes after dental work or a new medicine. If a clinician prescribes a topical corticosteroid, apply it only as directed and keep it away from unintended areas.

Arrange an appointment when a lower-lip change lasts, recurs in the same spot, bleeds, becomes firm, or does not heal. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, breathing or swallowing difficulty, severe pain, or inability to drink. An examination may include the mouth and nearby skin, and a clinician may recommend further testing for a persistent lesion.
