Lichen planus lips symptoms: what to notice

The lower lip or both lips may become dry, rough, inflamed, or tender. Some people notice peeling, crusting, small erosions, or pain when eating spicy, acidic, or salty foods. Lichen planus can also affect the inner cheeks, gums, or tongue, where fine white lines or sore patches may appear. Itchy skin and skin bumps elsewhere can be relevant clues, although a lip symptom alone cannot confirm the condition. Similar changes can come from irritation, allergy, infection, eczema, or another mouth disorder.

Record where the change began, whether it affects one or both lips, and what makes it sting or crack. Take a clear photograph if the appearance changes before an appointment. Apply a plain protective ointment, avoid licking or peeling the lips, and pause fragranced cosmetics, strong mouthwash, and products that burn. A clinician may prescribe a topical corticosteroid after examining the area.

Arrange a medical or dental assessment for a sore, ulcer, crust, or colour change that persists, repeatedly returns, or interferes with eating. Seek urgent help for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, heavy bleeding, or inability to drink. Prompt review is also sensible for a firm area, a lesion that keeps enlarging, or unexplained numbness.
