Lichen planus lips causes: what to know

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition in which immune activity affects the skin or mucosal lining. The precise reason it starts is not always identifiable. A clinician may review medicines, dental fillings or appliances, toothpaste, mouthwash, lip products, and habits that repeatedly rub or dry the lips. A contact reaction can resemble lichen planus, so the timing of a new product or medicine matters. Lichen planus can also occur on the wrists, ankles, scalp, nails, or inside the mouth; these findings help guide assessment but do not prove a cause.

Make a list of medicines, supplements, dental work, toothpaste, mouthwash, cosmetics, and foods introduced before the lip changes. Note whether symptoms began after rubbing, sun exposure, illness, or a treatment change, without stopping a prescribed medicine on your own. Use a bland moisturising ointment and avoid fragranced or tingling products while waiting for advice. Photos taken in consistent lighting can help show how the area changes.

Book an examination if lip scaling, soreness, white lines, swelling, or an ulcer persists or returns. Seek prompt help for rapidly increasing swelling, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, dehydration, or a lesion that repeatedly bleeds. Because allergy, infection, eczema, medication reactions, and other disorders can overlap in appearance, a diagnosis should be made from the examination rather than from a suspected trigger alone.
