Lichen planus lip treatment: what to know

A dermatologist or oral-health clinician may examine the lips and the inside of the mouth, ask about medicines and dental products, and consider whether another condition is causing the change. Treatment can include a prescribed topical corticosteroid applied carefully to the affected area. More extensive or persistent disease may call for medicine taken by mouth, such as oral corticosteroid treatment, under close supervision. The plan depends on the severity, exact site, and whether the mouth or skin elsewhere is involved.

Use bland, fragrance-free lip protection and avoid picking, peeling, tobacco, and products that sting. Choose gentle toothpaste and pause recently introduced lip cosmetics until the cause is clearer. Follow the prescribed schedule rather than applying extra medicine to speed recovery. Keep follow-up appointments so the clinician can check healing and adjust treatment; persistent lip inflammation may need a closer examination.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a lip sore, scale, ulcer, or colour change that does not settle, especially when it bleeds, forms a persistent crust, or makes eating difficult. Seek prompt care if swelling affects swallowing or breathing, or if you cannot keep fluids down. A new or changing lesion should not be self-treated for a long period because several lip conditions can look alike.

Ask whether the lips alone are involved, whether a biopsy or mouth examination is needed, how long to use the prescribed treatment, and which toothpaste or lip products should be avoided. Ask what improvement should look like and when a review is needed.
