Lichen planus in the mouth: symptoms

Oral lichen planus can appear as fine white lines or a net-like pattern on the inner cheeks, tongue or gums. Some people develop red, raw or ulcerated areas with soreness, stinging or burning. Toothpaste, spicy foods, acidic drinks and rough foods may aggravate discomfort. These signs can resemble thrush, irritation, allergy or other mouth conditions, so an oral examination is needed rather than self-diagnosis.

Arrange assessment with a dentist, doctor or dermatologist familiar with oral conditions. Treatment may include a prescribed topical corticosteroid designed for the mouth; use it only as instructed and do not substitute a skin product. Choose gentle oral-care products, avoid tobacco and alcohol-based mouthwash, and temporarily limit foods that sting.
