Lichen planus in dark skin

Redness may be less obvious on richly pigmented skin. Raised bumps can appear purple, deep brown, slate-grey or nearly skin-coloured, and fine surface lines may be easier to feel than see. After a flare, darker or lighter patches can remain even when itching settles. A clinician should examine texture, distribution and symptoms rather than judge the condition by colour alone.

Use the prescribed treatment exactly as directed. A topical corticosteroid may calm a limited area; broader disease may require oral corticosteroid treatment or another plan from a dermatologist.
