The name refers to a pattern of inflammation, not an infection that you pass to another person. Skin lesions may be itchy, purple or reddish, flat-topped, and sometimes crossed by fine lines. Other forms affect the mouth or genital lining and can look like tender patches or sores. Nail or scalp involvement may alter growth. The appearance varies, and itchy skin or bumps alone cannot establish this diagnosis. A dermatologist may ask when the changes began, examine several body sites, and consider a sample if the pattern needs confirmation.

Note the sites affected and any triggers such as friction, new medicines, or irritating products. Wash gently, moisturise dry skin, and avoid picking or scrubbing lesions. Treatment is selected by location and severity: topical corticosteroids may suit some skin or mucosal areas, while oral corticosteroid treatment may be used for broader inflammation. Follow the prescribed schedule and report unwanted burning, thinning, or other changes instead of adjusting treatment alone. Ask for written instructions if medical terms or application directions are unclear.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for a new persistent rash, recurrent sores, nail or scalp changes, or symptoms that disturb sleep or eating. Seek prompt care for trouble swallowing, eye pain or changed vision, rapidly spreading blistering, fever, pus, or a sore that will not heal. The urgency comes from these specific features, not from the presence of a bump alone.
