Lichen planus and dry skin

Lichen planus may appear as itchy, flat-topped bumps or patches with surface roughness. Scratching, frequent washing, cold air, and fragranced products can weaken the skin barrier and add tightness or flaking. Dryness around a rash does not prove that the rash is lichen planus; itchy skin and skin bumps can have many causes. Cracking, soreness, or thick scale may mean the skin needs a closer examination, especially if the area is on the hands, feet, scalp, mouth, or genital skin.

Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser soon after washing and repeat when the skin feels tight. Keep showers brief and use lukewarm water; pat rather than rub. Choose loose, breathable clothing and avoid scratching, abrasive cloths, and fragranced oils. If a clinician prescribes topical corticosteroids, use them only on the stated site and for the advised period. More extensive inflammation may require oral corticosteroid treatment or another prescription approach. Moisturiser supports the barrier, but it does not replace treatment for active lesions.

Arrange an appointment if dryness persists despite gentle care, the rash is spreading, cracks are painful, or sleep is disrupted by itch. Seek prompt care for mouth or genital soreness, eye symptoms, rapidly worsening redness, pus, fever, or a non-healing area. These features can need treatment beyond a moisturiser and should be assessed in person.

Ask whether the scaling is part of lichen planus, eczema, contact irritation, or another problem. Confirm which moisturiser and steroid strength suit the site, how often to apply them, and when to return if cracks or itch continue.
