Is lichen planus dangerous?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that can cause itchy, flat-topped purple or reddish bumps, rough patches, or sores. Skin disease may settle, leave temporary dark marks, or return. Mouth or genital involvement can produce tender raw areas that interfere with eating, drinking, intimacy, or daily comfort. Nail and scalp changes can also require attention because they may affect growth or hair. A symptom such as itchy skin or skin bumps does not by itself identify the cause; a clinician examines the pattern and may arrange further testing when the appearance is unusual.

Arrange a dermatology review if the rash is spreading, recurring, or affecting a sensitive site. Keep a record of new medicines, supplements, and products used before the eruption began. Use fragrance-free moisturiser, avoid scratching and harsh scrubs, and protect irritated areas from friction. Treatment may include prescribed topical corticosteroids; more extensive disease may call for oral corticosteroid treatment or another plan chosen after an examination. Do not start, stop, or share steroid medicine without guidance, because strength and duration depend on the body site.

Seek prompt medical care for painful mouth sores that make swallowing difficult, genital sores, eye pain or vision changes, rapidly worsening skin, widespread blistering, fever, or signs of infection such as increasing warmth, pus, or tenderness. Urgent assessment is also sensible when a sore does not heal or repeatedly bleeds. These warning signs describe the need for examination; they do not establish a diagnosis.

Ask which body sites are involved, whether your mouth, nails, scalp, or genital skin should be checked, and what changes should trigger review. Clarify how to apply prescribed treatment, how long to use it, and what follow-up is needed if symptoms return.
