What should you know about lichen planus brown skin?

Lichen planus reflects inflammation in the skin. Brown skin may show that inflammation as plum, violet, reddish-brown or deep brown rather than the bright red many people expect. Small bumps can have a subtle surface sheen and may join into rougher patches. The itch can be intense, and rubbing can deepen the colour or cause breaks in the skin. Once the immune activity settles, post-inflammatory darkening may remain; some people also notice lighter areas where inflammation has altered pigment. Colour alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Photographing the area in consistent light can help your clinician compare changes over time. Use a bland moisturiser and gentle cleanser, avoid scrubbing and choose loose clothing where friction worsens the itch. A dermatologist may prescribe topical corticosteroids for limited patches or discuss oral corticosteroid treatment when several areas are involved. Treatment choice depends on location, thickness, symptoms and other health conditions. Do not use bleaching products or unlabelled steroid mixtures on the marks.

Book a review if the rash is persistent, spreading, severely itchy or interfering with sleep. Seek prompt care for pus, increasing tenderness, fever, extensive peeling, or painful sores. Mouth, genital, eye, scalp and nail symptoms deserve assessment because they can require a different examination and treatment approach.
