Lezra letrozole: what to know

After menopause, much of the body’s oestrogen is made by converting other hormones in fatty tissue. Letrozole blocks aromatase, the enzyme involved in that conversion. Lower oestrogen can slow or control breast cancer cells that depend on the hormone signal.

Common effects can include hot flushes, sweating, tiredness, joint or muscle aches, headache, mood changes and vaginal dryness. Letrozole can also affect bone strength and cholesterol, so the treatment plan may include symptom review and checks suited to your health.

Take letrozole exactly as prescribed and at a consistent time. If you miss a dose, follow the instructions from your pharmacist or oncology team rather than doubling up. Tell the team about pregnancy plans, liver or kidney problems, bone conditions, and all medicines or supplements.

Your clinician may discuss bone health, physical activity, calcium or vitamin D intake, and medicines that could interact with treatment. Do not stop letrozole because of aches or hot flushes without discussing alternatives or supportive measures.

Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, one-sided weakness, facial swelling, or a painful swollen leg. Contact your treatment team promptly for severe mood changes, new severe bone pain, a fall or suspected fracture, or symptoms that make daily activities difficult.

Ask why letrozole is recommended, how long the planned course may be, which side effects deserve a call, and whether bone-density monitoring is appropriate. Ask before using hormone-containing products or supplements marketed for menopause symptoms.
