Levofloxacin in brucellosis treatment: what to know

Brucellosis is a bacterial infection that can cause prolonged or recurring fever, sweats, tiredness, muscle aches and joint pain. Antibiotic plans are selected according to the suspected source, illness pattern, pregnancy status, age, allergies and other medicines. Levofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone group and may be considered in particular circumstances, often as part of a planned combination or alternative regimen. The diagnosis and response may involve examination and a blood test.

Take the prescribed course exactly as directed and keep follow-up appointments, even if fever improves. Do not share tablets, save leftovers or change the schedule without the prescriber. Tell the team about tendon problems, nerve symptoms, heart rhythm conditions, kidney disease, pregnancy, and every medicine or supplement you use. Separate the dose from mineral-containing antacids or supplements if your pharmacist advises this, because absorption can be reduced. Avoid strenuous exercise if tendon pain develops.

Contact a clinician promptly for tendon pain or swelling, new numbness or burning, severe watery or bloody diarrhoea, palpitations, fainting, confusion, or a severe allergic reaction. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or facial swelling. A fever, night sweats or joint pain that returns during treatment also needs review rather than an unsupervised repeat course.
