What should you know about what letrozole is used for?

Letrozole belongs to a group called aromatase inhibitors. By blocking aromatase, it reduces the body's production of oestrogen after menopause. This can reduce hormonal stimulation of cancer cells that use oestrogen signals. It is not a general treatment for every breast lump or every cancer diagnosis.

Your team may recommend it after surgery, alongside another stage of cancer care, or when controlling an established hormone-sensitive cancer. The reason and schedule are individual. They depend on the tumour's receptor results, your previous therapy, menopausal status, and other health conditions.

Follow the prescription and take each tablet at a consistent time. Keep appointments for treatment review, and mention joint pain, stiffness, hot flushes, tiredness, mood changes, or sleep problems rather than silently stopping. Your clinician can decide whether an effect needs treatment, investigation, or a change in plan.

Give your healthcare team an updated list of medicines and supplements. Discuss pregnancy plans, liver problems, bone concerns, and any new symptoms. Do not start a complementary product on the assumption that it is compatible with cancer treatment.

Seek prompt advice for severe pain, unusual bleeding, yellowing of the skin, a significant rash, or symptoms that rapidly worsen. Call emergency services for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, or swelling of the face or throat with breathing difficulty.
