What should you know about letrozole hormone?

Some cancers use oestrogen signals to grow or remain active. Letrozole blocks aromatase, the enzyme that makes oestrogen from certain androgens, so fewer of those signals are available. It is used only when this approach fits the cancer and the person’s treatment plan. It is not the same as chemotherapy, and it does not replace surgery, radiotherapy or other medicines when those are recommended.

Changes in oestrogen can affect hot flushes, sleep, mood, sexual wellbeing, joints and bones. Tell your team what you notice rather than stopping treatment on your own.

Take letrozole according to the prescription and keep follow-up appointments. Bring a complete medicine list, including non-prescription products. Your team may discuss bone health, physical activity, calcium and vitamin D, and tests suited to your medical history. A symptom diary can show whether discomfort follows a pattern and whether support is helping. Ask before starting supplements because some products can affect treatment decisions.

Report ongoing joint or bone pain, new mood symptoms, severe sleep disruption or a fall. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden confusion, new one-sided weakness, collapse or swelling of the face or throat with breathing trouble.

Ask whether your cancer is hormone-sensitive, what response will be checked, how long the plan is expected to continue and which symptoms should trigger a call. Ask about bone protection and options for managing hot flushes or joint symptoms.
