Aromatase is found in several tissues, including fatty tissue and the adrenal glands. When its activity is blocked, less oestrogen is made from androgen hormones. Because oestrogen also supports bone strength, joints, mood and other body functions, reduced levels can cause unwanted effects. Your oncology team weighs the intended cancer benefit against these effects and may adapt the plan if needed.

Take the tablet as directed, at a consistent time if that helps you remember, and follow the label instructions about a missed dose. Keep a list of medicines and supplements. Attend blood tests and other reviews arranged by your team. Mention bone pain, stiffness, hot flushes, headaches, sleep problems or low mood; documenting when symptoms began can make the review more useful.

Seek prompt advice for persistent pain, a fall with possible injury, unusual weakness, severe headache or a major change in mood. Emergency care is appropriate for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, facial or throat swelling, collapse or sudden trouble speaking or moving.

Ask which hormone-sensitive process is being targeted, how response will be assessed, which side effects matter most for you and whether bone-density or other monitoring is planned. Ask what to do if a dose is missed.
