Letrozole 2.5 mg: how to use it safely

Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor. In hormone-sensitive breast cancer care, it lowers the body's production of oestrogen, which can reduce hormonal stimulation of some cancer cells. The tablet strength does not tell you how long treatment should continue; that plan depends on your diagnosis, previous treatment, menopausal status, and response.

Swallow the tablet as directed, with or without food unless your clinician gives different instructions. Try to take it at the same time each day. Do not change the dose, stop suddenly, or share tablets. Your care team may review symptoms, bone health, cholesterol, and other medicines during follow-up.

If you miss a dose, follow the instructions supplied with your medicine or contact your oncology team; do not take extra tablets to compensate. Keep an up-to-date list of prescriptions, over-the-counter products, and supplements, because some medicines can affect treatment decisions. Store tablets as labelled and keep them away from children.

Joint stiffness, hot flushes, tiredness, headache, or changes in mood can occur. Tell your clinician if symptoms interfere with walking, sleep, work, or everyday tasks, because practical treatment adjustments may be available.

Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, one-sided weakness, or swelling and pain in a limb. Contact your cancer team promptly for a new fracture, severe or persistent bone pain, marked vision changes, or an allergic reaction such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing.
