What should you know about lentigo dermoscopy?

A clinician places a dermatoscope over the skin, sometimes with a contact liquid, to reduce surface reflection. Magnification can reveal pigment networks, dots, lines, colour variation and border structures. These clues are interpreted together with the spot's history, location and changes over time.

Dermoscopy can support the distinction between a benign lentigo, another pigmented lesion and a melanoma, but it is not a pathology diagnosis. A concerning pattern may lead to a biopsy or mole removal so the tissue can be examined.

Bring details about when the mark appeared, whether it has altered, and any previous photographs or treatment. Avoid applying makeup over the area on the day if possible, and mention medicines or skin conditions that affect healing.

During the visit, ask whether the clinician recommends a baseline image, short-interval review or sampling. If a biopsy is advised, ask how the wound will be closed, how long pathology usually takes at that clinic, and how you will receive the result.

Arrange assessment when a lentigo develops uneven colour, an irregular edge, a new raised part, bleeding, crusting or clear enlargement. Seek faster review when several changes occur together or when the mark is on a site that is difficult to monitor yourself.

Ask which dermoscopic features were reassuring or concerning, whether the spot should be photographed, and what change should trigger an earlier visit. If removal is suggested, ask whether the purpose is diagnosis, treatment or both.
