What should you know about lemon juice for food poisoning?

Short answer
Lemon juice does not cure food poisoning; replacing lost fluid and salts is the main priority while symptoms settle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main priority
- Replace fluid and salts lost through vomiting or diarrhoea.
- Stomach comfort
- Undiluted lemon juice may aggravate nausea or abdominal irritation.
What lemon juice can and cannot do
Food poisoning may cause diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, and fever. Lemon juice is acidic and may irritate an already unsettled stomach, particularly if taken undiluted. It does not reliably destroy the cause of an infection inside the body and should not replace oral rehydration. Symptoms can also come from another illness, so the timing of the meal alone cannot confirm the cause.
Safer recovery steps
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with smaller amounts. Continue light foods as appetite returns, and avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen nausea. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while you have diarrhoea or vomiting. If you cannot keep fluids down, a clinician can assess dehydration and may consider IV fluid therapy.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or breathing difficulty. Seek prompt advice for signs of dehydration such as very little urine, a dry mouth, dizziness, or inability to drink. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant medical conditions may need earlier assessment.

Questions people ask
Can I drink lemon water while recovering?
A diluted drink may be tolerated by some people, but stop if it worsens nausea or pain and do not use it instead of oral rehydration.
What if vomiting prevents drinking?
Try tiny, frequent sips; if they still cannot stay down or urine becomes very limited, seek medical care.
