Leg pain due to kidney stones: what to know

A stone moving through the urinary tract can cause severe pain that comes in waves and changes location. It may spread from the side or back toward the lower abdomen, groin or upper thigh, which can be mistaken for leg pain. Pain in the calf or lower leg is more likely to have another explanation. Kidney stones may also cause painful urination, blood in the urine, nausea, or difficulty passing urine. Dehydration can increase the chance of concentrated urine.

Record where the pain began, whether it moves, how it comes and goes, and any urinary symptoms. Seek a GP consultation if pain is unexplained, persistent or recurrent. A clinician may examine you, test urine and decide whether imaging such as an abdominal ultrasound is appropriate. Drink normally unless a clinician has advised fluid restriction; do not force large amounts while severe pain or vomiting is present.

Seek urgent medical help for severe uncontrolled pain, fever or chills, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, faintness, or feeling very unwell. A blocked urinary tract with infection can become serious. New weakness, numbness, swelling or colour change in a leg also needs assessment because it may not be related to a stone.
