What should you know about leg knee swelling reasons?

Short answer
Leg or knee swelling can result from injury, inflammation, fluid buildup, or gradual joint changes, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What knee swelling may mean
Swelling after a twist, fall, or sudden change of direction can occur with an ACL tear or meniscus tear. A swollen, tender area over the kneecap can fit knee bursitis, while a soft fullness behind the knee may be a Baker's cyst. Gout can cause a rapidly painful, warm, red joint. Knee osteoarthritis more often causes swelling with stiffness and activity-related discomfort. A knee can also swell because extra fluid has collected inside the joint; swelling alone does not identify one cause.
What you can do now
Reduce activities that increase pain, keep the leg comfortably elevated, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if it helps. Avoid forcing a swollen knee through deep bending or impact exercise. Note when the swelling began, whether it followed an injury, and whether the knee feels hot, locks, gives way, or cannot fully move. A clinician may examine the joint and decide whether imaging or joint aspiration is useful.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical assessment for marked swelling after an injury, inability to bear weight, a locked or unstable knee, or swelling that keeps returning. Seek urgent care for a hot, red, very painful knee with fever or feeling acutely unwell, because an infection needs rapid evaluation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what findings point toward injury, crystal inflammation, bursitis, or osteoarthritis; whether you need imaging; and which activities are safe while the swelling settles. Ask how to respond if the knee locks, gives way, or becomes warm.

Questions people ask
Does knee swelling always mean a serious injury?
No. Swelling has several possible causes, including irritation and gradual joint changes, but sudden severe swelling or loss of function deserves assessment.
Should I exercise with a swollen knee?
Choose gentle movement that does not increase pain and pause impact or deep-bending activities until the cause is clearer.
