Left Thumb and Wrist Pain: What to Know

Pain on the thumb side of the wrist that worsens with gripping, lifting or moving the thumb can occur with [De Quervain's Tenosynovitis](/conditions/de-quervain-tenosynovitis/). Numbness or pins and needles in the thumb, index or middle fingers may point toward [Carpal Tunnel Syndrome](/conditions/carpal-tunnel-syndrome/). Reduce activities that repeatedly provoke pain, especially forceful pinching, texting, lifting and twisting. Keep the wrist in a comfortable neutral position and use cold therapy briefly with a cloth barrier if swelling follows activity. A removable support may help for short periods, but it should not replace assessment when movement is limited. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms continue, recur, or affect grip. The clinician can examine the thumb, wrist and sensation and decide whether imaging is needed.

Seek urgent care after a fall or blow if the wrist looks deformed, swelling is rapid, fingers become numb or pale, or you cannot move the thumb or wrist.
