Left Side Throat Pain and Ear Pain

The throat and ear share nearby nerves, so pain from a sore throat, tonsil inflammation or a middle-ear problem may be felt in both places. A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, strep throat or glandular fever can cause throat discomfort with fever, tiredness or swollen glands. Allergic rhinitis can create post-nasal drip and pressure, while acid reflux can irritate the throat without a cold. One-sided pain may also come from a local ulcer, dental problem or jaw tension, which cannot be diagnosed from location alone.

Rest, drink fluids and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Warm drinks or salt-water gargles may soothe the throat. Avoid smoke and other irritants, and follow the label directions for any suitable pain relief. Do not start leftover antibiotics; the right treatment depends on the examination and cause. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms are worsening, do not settle, or keep returning, especially when pain remains clearly on one side.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing swelling, a muffled voice, severe dehydration, confusion or a stiff neck. Prompt assessment is also sensible for severe one-sided throat pain, difficulty opening the mouth, hearing loss, discharge from the ear, or a high fever. A clinician can inspect the throat and ear and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
