What should you know about left side abdominal pain and swelling?

Bloating after meals can accompany indigestion, acid reflux, gastritis, food poisoning, or gastroenteritis, especially with nausea, diarrhoea, or vomiting. Coeliac disease and Crohn's disease commonly present with digestive symptoms that may include pain and abdominal swelling. Diverticular disease can affect the lower left abdomen and may cause altered bowel habits; worsening pain or fever needs medical review. Gallstones usually cause upper abdominal pain, often on the right, so left-sided symptoms need a broader assessment.

Record where the pain sits, when swelling appears, recent foods, bowel movements, vomiting, fever, and any chance of pregnancy. Eat smaller meals, sip fluids, and avoid foods that clearly worsen symptoms while keeping a simple symptom diary. Do not take laxatives for severe unexplained pain. A clinician may examine the abdomen and decide whether blood tests, stool testing, or imaging is appropriate.

Get urgent care for severe or rapidly increasing pain, a hard or very tender abdomen, repeated vomiting, blood or black stool, faintness, fever with worsening pain, or inability to pass stool or gas.
