Left nipple itching during pregnancy: what to check

Pregnancy can make breast skin feel stretched, dry, sensitive, or more easily irritated by sweat, fabric, soaps, and laundry products. Friction from a changing bra can focus symptoms on one nipple. Contact Dermatitis may cause a defined itchy rash after exposure, while Atopic Dermatitis or Asteatotic Eczema can cause dryness, scaling, and cracks. Hives may be raised and fleeting; Skin Yeast Infection can cause soreness and a moist rash. Psoriasis, Lichen Planus, and Scabies are less common possibilities. Itching alone does not identify a cause, so the nipple and surrounding skin should be examined if the problem persists.

Use a soft, well-fitting bra and change out of damp clothing. Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Apply a plain moisturiser to intact skin and avoid scratching, perfumed products, and new topical medicines unless a maternity clinician or pharmacist confirms they are suitable in pregnancy. Note whether the itch follows a product, fabric, heat, or sweating, and check for rash, cracks, discharge, or changes in the nipple.

Contact your maternity team or clinician if itching is persistent, one-sided and worsening, or accompanied by a rash that does not settle, crusting, bleeding, discharge, a new lump, marked pain, warmth, or fever. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Pregnancy-specific itching elsewhere on the body should also be discussed promptly.

Does the skin look like eczema, contact irritation, yeast, or another condition? Which moisturiser or treatment is appropriate during pregnancy? Should the nipple or breast be rechecked if the change continues?
