Left knee swollen on the left side: what should you know?

A soft or tender area beside the kneecap may involve a bursa or irritated soft tissue. Fullness across the whole knee suggests fluid inside the joint. A twist can injure the ACL or Meniscus Tear structures and may bring swelling, pain, or movement restriction. Knee Osteoarthritis can produce stiffness and episodic fluid, while Gout may cause sudden warmth and intense tenderness. A Baker's Cyst is usually felt at the back rather than the outer side, but nearby fullness can make the location difficult to judge without examination. Knee Bursitis is another possibility when swelling is close to a pressure point.

A clinician may ask about injury, kneeling, exercise, fever, and how quickly the area changed. They may assess skin temperature, tenderness, range of motion, stability, and whether the swelling is fluid-filled.

Stop the activity that triggered or worsens the swelling and avoid repeated squatting, kneeling, and side-to-side twisting. Use a cloth-wrapped cold pack for short periods if it feels soothing. Keep the leg supported and move the knee gently without forcing pain or resistance. Do not massage a hot, very tender area or try to puncture it. Record whether the swelling is beside the kneecap, behind the knee, or widespread, and note changes in walking, bending, or warmth.

Seek urgent care for fever with a hot red knee, severe pain after injury, inability to bear weight, a deformed joint, or rapidly spreading redness. Sudden calf swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness needs urgent attention. If the area remains swollen, repeatedly returns, or causes locking or giving way, arrange a clinical assessment. Joint Aspiration may be considered by a clinician when fluid needs testing or pressure relief.

Ask whether the swelling is in the joint, a bursa, or another soft tissue; whether imaging is needed; and whether fluid testing would help. Ask which activities are safe, how to protect the knee at work, and which changes should prompt urgent review.
