Left insular glioma

The insula lies deep within the side of the brain and connects with networks involved in sensation, movement, language, attention, and emotion. A tumour in the left insula can behave differently from another glioma because its position is close to important brain pathways. Symptoms may include seizures, headaches, changes in speech or understanding, altered sensation, weakness, or difficulty with attention. Symptoms depend on the tumour and surrounding brain, and their presence does not by itself establish the diagnosis. MRI is commonly used to define its location and relationship to nearby structures.

Keep a record of seizures, speech changes, weakness, headaches, and medicines. Bring previous scans and a medication list to appointments. Specialists may discuss observation, a biopsy, surgery, or treatment after reviewing imaging and tissue findings. The aim of surgery may be to obtain a diagnosis or remove as much tumour as can be done safely while protecting language and movement. Depending on the findings, Brain Tumour Surgery and Radiotherapy may form parts of the plan. Ask for support with seizure safety, work, driving, and rehabilitation.

Seek emergency help for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than usual, sudden one-sided weakness, new trouble speaking, severe drowsiness, repeated vomiting, or a rapidly worsening headache. Do not drive yourself after a seizure or sudden neurological change. If symptoms are milder but recurring, contact the neurology or oncology team so the pattern can be assessed.

Ask what the MRI shows, whether language or movement pathways are nearby, and whether tissue sampling is needed. Discuss the purpose and limits of surgery, seizure treatment, rehabilitation, pathology results, and how Radiotherapy could fit the plan.
