What should you know about left handed cluster headaches?

Left-sided cluster headaches are severe attacks around one eye that occur in repeated bouts and need medical assessment. The pain may spread to the temple, forehead or face on the same side. Attacks can begin suddenly, last for a limited period and recur at similar times, sometimes with a blocked or runny nostril, watery eye, eyelid swelling or facial sweating.

The word left-handed describes the side of the pain, not a separate disease. Cluster headache is a neurological headache disorder with a characteristic pattern: intense one-sided pain, restlessness during an attack and temporary symptoms affecting the eye or nose on that side. A one-sided headache can have other causes, so a new, unusually severe or changing pattern should not be self-diagnosed. Keeping a record of start time, duration, location, eye or nose symptoms, sleep and possible triggers can help a clinician distinguish it from migraine, sinus symptoms or other headache disorders.

Arrange a GP consultation for a first episode, frequent attacks or pain that is disrupting sleep and daily activities. During an attack, move to a calm, safe place and avoid driving if your vision or concentration is affected. Do not repeatedly increase over-the-counter pain medicine without advice; cluster attacks often need a specific treatment plan. Bring your symptom diary and a list of medicines, supplements, allergies and any history of headaches.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, fainting, confusion, trouble speaking, seizure, fever with a stiff neck, or severe headache after a head injury. Urgent assessment is also needed for a painful red eye, new vision loss, or a headache that feels distinctly different from previous attacks. These warning signs can point to problems other than cluster headache.
