Left hand itching and swelling: possible causes

A sudden itchy hand may follow contact with soap, gloves, plants, metals, or another irritant. Dryness, eczema, hives, a bite, or a flare of psoriasis can also produce itch and puffiness. Contact Dermatitis often follows exposure and may leave a defined rash, while Hives can appear as raised areas that change location. Atopic Dermatitis, Asteatotic Eczema, Skin Yeast Infection, Lichen Planus, and Scabies have different patterns that a clinician can distinguish. Redness, warmth, tenderness, discharge, or fever makes infection more concerning than a simple irritant reaction.

Remove rings and bracelets while the hand is comfortable, then rinse away any suspected irritant and pat the skin dry. Apply a cool, clean compress for short periods and use a bland moisturiser if the skin is dry or cracked. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and a new cream that might hide the pattern. Photograph the hand and note recent foods, medicines, products, bites, or activities. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable treatment, especially during pregnancy or if you have other medical conditions.

Get urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt assessment when the hand becomes hot, very painful, increasingly red, numb, weak, or difficult to move, or when fever or drainage appears. A persistent one-sided problem also deserves review even if the swelling is mild.
