Left hand feels like pins and needles: what should you know?

Brief tingling after sleeping on an arm or holding a position may settle when pressure is relieved. Repeated or persistent symptoms can arise from a pinched nerve in the neck or wrist, peripheral neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, or an underactive thyroid. Anxiety and panic can cause tingling during fast breathing, often with a racing heart or feeling of fear. A stroke or transient ischaemic attack commonly presents with sudden one-sided weakness or numbness, especially when speech, vision, balance, or facial movement also changes.

Change position gently and check whether sensation returns. Avoid leaning on the elbow or wrist for long periods, and record which fingers are affected, how long episodes last, and whether neck movement triggers them. Book a medical review if the sensation keeps returning, lasts, affects grip, or is accompanied by pain or weakness. Do not drive yourself if sudden neurological symptoms are present.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden facial drooping, arm weakness, trouble speaking, new confusion, loss of balance, or a severe unexplained headache. Emergency help is also needed for tingling with chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, or marked weakness. Symptoms that improve still require urgent advice because a transient ischaemic attack can be brief.
