Left feet swelling in pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy can increase fluid in the body and pressure in the pelvis, making swelling more noticeable in the feet and ankles, especially later in the day or after standing. Mild swelling is often present on both sides. Swelling that is clearly greater on the left may also reflect local pressure, an injury, or a blood clot, particularly if the calf is painful, warm, or red. A sudden increase in swelling of the face or hands, headache, vision change, or upper abdominal pain can occur with pre-eclampsia.

Rest with your feet raised, change position regularly, avoid standing for long periods, and choose comfortable shoes. Gentle movement may support circulation unless your maternity team has advised otherwise. Do not massage a painful or suddenly swollen leg before it has been assessed. Tell your midwife or obstetric team about new one-sided swelling so they can decide whether you need examination, blood-pressure checks, urine testing, or further assessment.

Seek urgent care for sudden swelling in one leg with pain, warmth, redness, or tenderness. Call emergency services for breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, faintness, or a racing heartbeat. Contact your maternity team promptly for sudden swelling of the face or hands, severe headache, visual disturbance, pain beneath the ribs, or feeling very unwell, as these may be warning signs of pre-eclampsia.
