Left back-of-head pain: what to know

Pain near the back of the head can be referred from tight or irritated neck structures and may change with posture or neck movement. It can also occur with migraine, a tender scalp, or irritation of nerves near the base of the skull. The left-sided location alone cannot identify the cause.

A clinician may ask about onset, duration, injury, fever, vision, nausea, neck stiffness, and neurological changes. A condition such as Lumbar Spondylosis affects the lower spine and would not usually explain pain at the back of the head, so the body region matters when discussing symptoms.

Record when the pain starts and whether screens, sleep position, jaw clenching, or neck movement affect it. Keep the neck in a relaxed position, take regular movement breaks, and avoid forceful neck manipulation. A clinician can guide treatment after checking the head, neck, nerves, and relevant medical history.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, a seizure, loss of vision, severe fever with neck stiffness, or headache after a significant injury. Arrange prompt review if the pain is new, steadily worsening, or repeatedly waking you.
