Left armpit pain without a lump: what to know

Strain in the chest, shoulder, or upper arm can irritate muscles around the armpit, especially after lifting or repetitive movement. Shaving, a rash, an irritated hair follicle, or pressure from clothing can affect the skin. Nerve irritation may cause burning, tingling, or pain that travels toward the arm.

Pain can also be felt near breast tissue or lymph nodes even when no lump is easy to feel. Breast cancer and lymphoma can involve the armpit, but armpit pain alone does not identify either condition. A clinician may examine the breast, chest wall, skin, shoulder, and neck, then decide whether imaging or other tests are useful.

Note when the pain began, whether movement changes it, and whether there is redness, warmth, a rash, fever, breast change, or arm swelling. Rest the area from activities that clearly trigger the pain, and avoid repeatedly pressing for a lump. Arrange a medical appointment if the discomfort continues, returns, or has no clear mechanical trigger.

Seek urgent help for chest pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, sudden weakness, or severe pain spreading to the jaw or arm. Arrange prompt assessment for a new breast or armpit change, arm swelling, persistent fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or pain that is worsening or waking you.
