What should you know about left arm pain and hand numbness?

Pain travelling from the neck or shoulder toward the hand may occur with Cervical Radiculopathy. Wrist-level nerve compression, including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, can cause hand tingling with aching that may extend into the forearm. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome more often affects the little-finger side and may flare when the elbow stays bent. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome can produce symptoms influenced by shoulder position and may be accompanied by arm colour or temperature changes. These are possible explanations for the symptom pattern, not conclusions from symptoms alone.

Describe where pain starts, which fingers feel numb, and whether neck movement, overhead work, elbow pressure, or wrist use changes it. Weakness, clumsiness, or dropping items gives the examiner additional information about nerve function.

Pause the movement that reliably provokes symptoms and keep the neck, elbow, and wrist in comfortable neutral positions. Avoid prolonged elbow leaning and forceful gripping. Gentle movement is reasonable if it does not increase pain, tingling, or weakness. Arrange a clinical assessment when symptoms persist, recur, disturb sleep, or affect work or daily tasks. The treatment plan depends on the level and cause of nerve irritation.

Seek emergency help for sudden left arm pain and numbness with chest pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, faintness, facial weakness, or speech difficulty. Urgent assessment is also warranted for sudden loss of strength, a cold or blue hand, rapidly spreading numbness, or symptoms after significant injury. Do not wait for an orthopaedic appointment when these warning signs appear.

Ask whether the symptoms fit a neck, shoulder, elbow, or wrist nerve pattern and what examination findings support that view. Discuss whether testing is needed, which activities to change, and what weakness or worsening should trigger earlier review.
