What should you know about left and right hearing test?

Short answer

A hearing test measures the left and right ears separately to compare hearing levels and guide further assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test checks

During audiometry, you usually wear headphones or insert earphones and respond when you hear tones. Each ear is tested independently across different pitches and loudness levels. Other parts of an assessment may check speech understanding, the eardrum and how the middle ear moves. Comparing sides can show whether hearing is similar or reduced more in one ear.

A difference between ears does not identify one diagnosis by itself. Earwax Buildup can block sound, while Meniere's Disease may be associated with fluctuating hearing, ringing or episodes of vertigo. The result is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and the timing of change.

Preparing and following up

Tell the audiologist about noise exposure, ear infections, ringing, dizziness, medicines and whether the change was sudden or gradual. Avoid loud noise before testing when advised, and answer consistently rather than guessing. Ask for the result in plain language, including whether the pattern suggests an outer, middle or inner ear problem and whether repeat testing or referral is needed.

When to seek care

Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears needs urgent medical assessment, particularly when it occurs with dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache, ear discharge or other neurological symptoms. Do not delay review while waiting for a routine test if the change happened abruptly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether both ears were tested across speech and tones, what the side-to-side difference means, and whether wax removal, repeat audiometry or an ear specialist review is appropriate.

Questions people ask

Does a hearing test hurt?

Standard tone and speech testing is generally non-invasive; tell the clinician if any part feels uncomfortable.

Why test the ears separately?

Separate measurements show whether hearing differs between sides and help direct examination or referral.
