Left abdominal swelling without pain

The left side of the abdomen contains bowel, part of the stomach, the spleen, muscles, and other tissues. Gas, constipation, a hernia, weight change, or a full bladder can alter its shape without causing pain. Fluid in the abdomen, an enlarged spleen, or a mass can also produce swelling, sometimes before discomfort develops.

Some cancers can present with abdominal enlargement, but the symptom does not identify cancer. Abdominal swelling is a possible presentation of ovarian cancer, liver cancer, and myelofibrosis, among many other conditions. The location, duration, bowel and bladder changes, appetite, weight, and examination findings help narrow the possibilities.

Note when the swelling began, whether it changes after meals or bowel movements, and whether it is a general fullness or a distinct lump. Arrange a medical appointment if it lasts, grows, recurs, or comes with reduced appetite, weight change, altered bowel habits, urinary symptoms, or unusual tiredness. Assessment may include an abdominal examination, blood tests, and imaging chosen for your symptoms.

Seek urgent help if swelling is accompanied by severe or sudden pain, repeated vomiting, a rigid abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, fever, black or bloody stools, or yellowing of the skin. Rapid enlargement or new breathlessness also needs prompt assessment because fluid or pressure can affect nearby organs.

Ask what structures may be causing the fullness, whether you need imaging, and which changes should trigger urgent review. Tell the clinician about menstrual or reproductive symptoms, bowel pattern, weight change, previous surgery, and any known liver or blood condition.
