What should you know about left abdominal pain during ovulation?

Ovulation pain may occur when an ovary releases an egg. It can feel like a one-sided ache, cramp or sharper twinge in the lower abdomen and may last from a short time to part of a day. The side can vary between cycles, and mild spotting can occur. Pain on the left is not, by itself, a way to identify its cause.

Other abdominal or pelvic problems can overlap with this pattern. Digestive conditions such as Diverticular Disease, Gastroenteritis, Food Poisoning, Gastritis, Coeliac Disease or Crohn's Disease may cause pain with bowel changes, nausea or fever. Pregnancy-related problems, ovarian cysts and urinary conditions also need consideration.

Record when the pain starts, where it sits, how long it lasts, and how it relates to bleeding, bowel movements, urination or your cycle. Rest, gentle warmth and fluids may help mild discomfort. Use a pain medicine only if it is suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician’s advice. Arrange a review if episodes are new, worsening, recurring outside the middle of the cycle or interfering with normal activities.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, a rigid or very tender abdomen, fever with vomiting, or pain when pregnancy is possible. Prompt assessment is also needed if pain persists, returns frequently, or comes with blood in the urine or stool.
