What should you know about leech bite cellulitis?

A leech bite breaks the skin and may continue oozing because leech saliva interferes with clotting. A small itchy mark or brief bleeding is not the same as cellulitis. Cellulitis presents as an expanding area of red, warm, swollen, tender skin; the edge may become less distinct as infection spreads.

The bite itself may be the entry point, but another wound or skin condition can also be responsible. Cracked skin from Athlete's Foot, for example, can provide an entry route elsewhere on the body. People with Type 2 Diabetes or reduced immunity may need a lower threshold for assessment because infection can become more serious.

Move away from the water or exposure, wash your hands, and gently rinse the area with clean water. Apply steady pressure with clean gauze if it is bleeding, then cover the wound. Avoid squeezing, cutting, burning, or applying harsh chemicals. Marking the edge of redness can help you describe whether it is spreading, but do not delay care to monitor it.

If a clinician diagnoses cellulitis, take the prescribed treatment exactly as directed and keep the wound clean. Do not share leftover antibiotics or stop early because the surface looks calmer. Rest the affected area and ask how to manage swelling while the infection settles.

Arrange prompt medical review for spreading redness, increasing skin pain, swelling, warmth, pus, or a wound that is not improving. Seek urgent care for fever with chills, confusion, faintness, rapid breathing, severe pain, red streaking, or feeling suddenly very unwell; these can signal a serious infection such as sepsis.
