Leaky nose and sneezing: what to know

Clear watery discharge, repeated sneezing, and an itchy nose or eyes often fit an allergy, especially when symptoms return around dust, pets, or particular rooms. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are possible triggers. A common cold may bring a runny or blocked nose, sore throat, cough, tiredness, or a changing discharge pattern. Smoke, strong scents, dry air, and temperature changes can irritate the nose without an infection. Sneezing itself is a protective reflex that helps remove irritants; it does not identify one cause on its own.

Notice where and when symptoms start, then reduce likely triggers: ventilate rooms, avoid smoke, and wash hands after contact with animals if that is relevant. Saline nasal rinsing or spray can clear mucus and irritants; use safe water and clean equipment as directed. Rest and drink normally during a cold. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on allergy medication, including whether a nasal spray is suitable and how to use it. Avoid using decongestant nasal sprays longer than the product instructions.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms last unusually long for you, keep returning, disturb sleep, or interfere with breathing through the nose. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, severe breathing difficulty, or faintness. Prompt review is also sensible for high fever with severe illness, facial swelling, severe one-sided facial pain, or symptoms after an injury.
