Leakage when sneezing: what it can mean

Sneezing tightens the abdominal muscles and raises pressure around the bladder. Pelvic-floor muscles normally help close the urethra during that instant. Weaker coordination or support can allow drops to escape. The amount of urine does not establish the cause, and leakage during sneezing is not proof that the sneeze comes from an allergy.

A cold can cause repeated sneezing, while allergic rhinitis, pet allergy, or house dust mite allergy can cause recurring sneezing. Managing the respiratory trigger may reduce opportunities for leakage, but persistent leakage deserves its own assessment.

Track the episodes for several days, including whether they follow sneezing, coughing, exercise, a sudden urge, or getting up at night. Try a gentle pelvic-floor contraction just before a known sneeze, if a clinician has shown you how to do it. Keep bowel movements regular, avoid heavy lifting while symptoms are troublesome, and use a suitable liner if needed.
