What should you know about calculated high LDL cholesterol?

Calculated LDL is usually estimated from other parts of a lipid panel rather than measured directly. The estimate can be less dependable when triglycerides are high or the sample and testing conditions differ. Your clinician will consider the whole report, including total cholesterol, HDL and triglycerides.

LDL itself does not usually cause symptoms. Risk is shaped by factors such as blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, kidney health, family history and previous artery disease. The number is useful for planning care, but it cannot diagnose a heart event.

Book a non-urgent review and bring the complete report plus a list of medicines and supplements. Ask whether the calculation is suitable for your triglyceride level and whether a repeat Cholesterol Test or direct measurement is appropriate.
